Today we rode 31 miles of path in the big city (Watson Park to 21st N & 119th E). About halfway into the ride we decided to stop for lunch and a big, ice cold beer despite the fact that it was 10:45am. After our early lunch we continued on our way, stopping at a Volkswagen show in the park. Along the Arkansas River we spotted big carp, turtles, fisherman, swimmers and the renovation work on the historic Broadview Hotel and the construction of the new dam. We encountered a lot of people on the path in the morning but come afternoon there were next to none. On the way home we spotted signs displaying a temperature of over 100 degrees (°F).
Last night I participated in our groups 5th annual 20 Inch Night where you are encouraged to ride a bike with 20" wheels or smaller. This ride gives those of us who have smaller bikes in our collections an excuse to get them out and ride them. Others have built special bikes for the occasion or went on the hunt for one just for this night. Out of the 3 I have, I chose to ride the Cat In The Hat bike. The bike fits me pretty good and is fun to ride. The seat gets a little old after a while though. A couple of years ago Nova bought a bike just for the occasion but she didn't participate this year.
Photos I took can be viewed here.
We started out the day by taking my 77 year old Dad on a bike ride. He jogs regularly and is in good shape but only rides a bike a couple times a year. We went to our local rail-to-trail the Prairie Sunset , riding it out and back and then some for a total of 17.5 miles. Along the way we spotted a fox, a deer, rabbits, a snake and a Oriole among other birds.
This evening we went to my parents for dinner and stuffed ourselves on Mom's chicken and noodles. My Daughter got me this shirt for Fathers Day.
Today the 6 of us (Nova, myself, our Daughter and 3 Grandkids) and some of our bike club rode a bike path in the big city stopping by an event that was giving away bikes to neighborhood residents. Some really nice old Schwinns were being given away to young kids who probably wont appreciate the "old" part.
This was Scooch's longest ride yet and she rode really well especially considering she was on a 16" wheeled bike. Stopping is her weak point but thankfully Grandma was alert and has quick reflexes.
Video...
Here are 2 Schwinns that were given away. The kids don't look thrilled but it could just be they are puzzled as to my excitement over their new bikes and why I wanted to take their photos.
Our bike club was asked to put on a display at the Smoky Hill River Festival in Salina, KS which is a 3 day music and art festival held this past weekend. I couldn't make it all 3 days as I had to work and had this event going on in town. My parents graciously agreed to haul my bikes to the festival for set up and then we went on the last day. It is a really nice event and our bike group did a great job of setting up and managing our display.
Yesterday along with our bike group and my entire family, we hosted a bicycle show and bicycle games for a first time event called Pedal Mania which is part of the big city's annual River Festival. The props we made for the Disgruntled Paperboy Throw functioned and held up pretty well. We also set up bicycle bowling where you roll a bicycle wheel at 2 liter bottles of pop set up like bowling pins and the Tube Toss which is like ring toss only throwing bicycle inner-tubes over traffic cones. I think everyone had a pretty good time.
Nova, our Daughter, our 3 Grand-kids and my Parents, all pitched in to help. We had 4 car/truck loads of people, bikes, game props, tent, tables, coolers etc... I don't think any of these bike events would happen if it wasn't for their support and help.
Our bike club is participating in a bike event for a festival in the big city. One of the games we're hosting is what I'm calling the Disgruntled Paperboy Throw. We've been busy building targets for the game.
The dog house name plate has since been changed to "Spike".
A friend and fellow club member got us a couple paper boy bags to use.
Tonight we tested a couple of the "targets" out. We hadn't gotten the real deal bags yet so the kids were using a messenger bag we have.
