Instead of going to work today I loaded the bike in the truck, the latest Brian Setzer on the Iphone and headed out to the local rail-to-trail (speaking of Brian Setzer Wow!). The temperature was in the low 40s and a cross wind of 15mph. I rode the length of the trail out and back. My intent has been to ride this trail at least once every season but somehow I missed Fall or at least what feels like Fall to me. New along the trail are the benches that were built and installed by a young man as part of his Eagle Scout project. They are spaced a mile apart and placed on the half mile points. Also the bridge that was damaged has been repaired and looks good. New but not good news is one of the trails landmarks is no longer there. The old Chevrolet farm truck is gone. More on the Prairie Sunset trail here.
"Now that the west side has an established trail with wonderful volunteers we are establishing an Andover-Augusta Trail Group to insure the continuation of the Red Bud Trail out of east Wichita completing a 20 mile linear parkway. Aprox eleven of those miles are in Butler County and it has come to our attention that if we as a community want this then we need to do some grassroot campaigning. The potential this trail offers is irreplaceable. We cannot let this slip out from under us. So if you are an east sider that would ride, walk or jog to Andover or Augusta, or if you are a Butler County resident, we need your help!!"
Today the youngest Grandson Blake (9 years old) and I rode our local rail-to-trail the Prairie Sunset. This was his first time riding a rail-to-trail. We rode from Garden Plain to Goddard and back for a total of 13 miles. He did great and seemed to enjoy it.
In an effort to beat the heat (at least the predicted high of 103) we headed out around 5:00 this morning to ride our local rail-to-trail the Prairie Sunset. The temperature was around 80 and it was a pleasant ride. Along the way we spotted 8 deer, more than a dozen rabbits and a skunk. Deer and skunk in the video below...
We started out the day by taking my 77 year old Father on a bike ride. He jogs regularly and is in good shape but only rides a bike a couple times a year. We went to our local rail-to-trail the Prairie Sunset , riding it out and back and then some for a total of 17.5 miles. Along the way we spotted a fox, a deer, rabbits, a snake and a Oriole among other birds.
This evening we went to my parents for dinner and stuffed ourselves on Mom's chicken and noodles. My Daughter got me this shirt for Fathers Day.
This evening we went out and rode our local rail-to-trail the Prairie Sunset at Goddard, Kansas. We rode it out and back (17 miles) ending the ride right at sunset. It was cloudy though so no spectacular sunset. I don't know what the white blooming bushes are but they were giving of a very pleasant scent. We encountered a deer, a pheasant, squirrels, rabbits, a dog and a lot of flying bugs along the trail.
At one road crossing we waited on a truck to pass before proceeding. As soon as the truck passed and we begin to cross the road the truck skid to a stop and started backing up to us. We assumed we had irritated the driver in some way although we couldn't imagine why. We just kept on riding to avoid a conflict. A little ways down the path I look over my shoulder and see a man standing in the path staring us down. Once my eyes finally focused on him I realized it was Dan a friend of ours. We turned around and went back to chat. With both of us at a place out of the ordinary, what are the odds that are paths would cross right at that moment?
A while back I vowed we'd ride this trail at least once every season. This was our Spring ride. Looking back though I see we didn't ride it last winter.
Rode the Prairie Sunset this afternoon out and back (16 miles). Extremely windy but the wind was out of the South and the trail runs East-West. Plus a lot of the trail is protected by a berm. Wasn't as much fall color as we'd hoped for but still a nice ride. I noticed 3 miles of the trail have been "adopted". I don't recall seeing these signs the last time we rode it.
This morning we got around early (early for me) to go ride the Prairie Sunset Trail just outside of town before it got to hot. This rail-to-trail is now open for 8 continuous miles. It was a bit overgrown but still a nice ride. Spotted a young deer, a turtle, lots of bugs, bunnies and birds. The temperature was in the mid 80s. Photos here.
This is our 2nd time to ride this trail. (Here) is the first.
